A double chin can be embarrassing and cosmetically displeasing. Double chins have several different causes. Many people naturally store excess fat under their chin. Some families seem to pass on a tendency to develop double chins, suggesting a genetic component as well. The aging process also contributes to the development of a double chin, while loss of tissue from the cheeks combined with loss of skin elasticity can cause the skin to slide and sag underneath the chin. A double chin in a thin person is often due to this process. There is of course a way to treat a double chin with facial rejuvenation.
Previously, the only cure for a double chin was to undergo some type of invasive surgery- liposuction combined with a facelift, or just a chin lift procedure. However, Kybella has been approved by the FDA for treating double chins in a minimally invasive fashion.
Kybella is composed of deoxycholic acid, which is injected into the double chin, where it breaks down the fat cells. The fat is then absorbed into the body.
What is a treatment like?
Each treatment session only takes 15 minutes, so the patient can immediately return to their normal activities.. A series of tiny injections are made into the chin area. Following the injections, over a course of a few days, the fat cells rupture and the fat is slowly absorbed into the body. Results begin to become apparent after a few weeks. Most people will need four to six treatment sessions, with about a month between treatments, to eliminate their double chin. The treatment permanently removes the fat cells, and will not need to be repeated again in the future.
Does it hurt?
There may be some minor discomfort during the injection procedure. Some patients experience temporary swelling, bruising, or redness at the injection site. In very rare cases, temporary damage to a nerve in the area may occur, which can cause an uneven smile or difficulty in swallowing for a few weeks to months.
Benefits
Kybella is the only minimally invasive treatment available today to treat a double chin. Surgical procedures to treat double chins tend to be painful and require several weeks of recovery. Double chins tend to be highly resistant to diet and exercise, and therefore cannot be treated through self-help methods. Kybella is permanent and will not need to be repeated again in the future. Even patients who experience significant weight gain after treatment will not re-develop a double chin. Slimming of the jawline can restore a more youthful, balanced look to the face.
