Am I a Good Candidate for Liposuction?

liposuction

Contrary to what late-night TV ads and gym membership salespeople would have you believe, it’s not always possible to achieve the body composition you want with diet and exercise alone. This is especially true for people who store their fat all in one place or have unsightly fat deposits on an otherwise-perfect physique.

If you feel you’ve done all you can with diet and exercise and still don’t have the results you want, liposuction may be the solution to your problem. While every case is different, there are some traits shared by all good liposuction candidates.

Your Weight is Normal with Pockets of Stubborn Fat

Liposuction is used to target areas where the body stores fat to improve overall shape and contour. It isn’t a miracle cure and it can’t be used to remove vast amounts of weight. For example, it can target a small lower-belly pouch, but isn’t used to remove a large gut. If you’re overweight or obese, focus on losing as much weight as you can before seeking out liposuction.

Your Skin is Undamaged and Elastic

The elasticity of your skin plays a huge role in whether or not liposuction is right for you. If you have hanging, loose skin or lots of stretch marks, liposuction could actually make the problem worse.

On the other hand, if you have supple skin, you’re a perfect candidate. Soft, elastic skin will tighten up against the new contours created by liposuction, making it impossible to tell you’ve ever had work done.

You Don’t Smoke

Smoking makes it harder for your body to heal, which can lead to excessive scarring and, possibly, an infection. If you do smoke cigarettes or marijuana, you will need to quit for several months before and after your liposuction procedure.

You’re in Good Overall Health

While liposuction is fairly easy on the body, the anesthetic can be difficult for patients that have any breathing problems such as COPD, chronic bronchitis or asthma. If you have diabetes, you’ll need to be well-controlled to have surgery and heal up properly afterwards.
