Tips for Dressing Each Body Shape

Sometimes you think you’ve found the absolute perfect outfit, but when you try it on, you feel like it looks terrible. It could be that the outfit simply didn’t flatter your body type. We all have different shapes, and different styles and cuts flatter different areas. Find out which body shape you have and how to dress to flatter it using this guide.

Hourglass Shape

What It Is: Well-defined waist line and proportionate upper and lower body.

What to Wear: Flaunt those balanced curves with fitted tops! Blazers, bomber jackets and anything fitted is flattering when it comes to outwear, as well. Avoid boxy dresses and jackets as they don’t show off your shape. When it comes to dresses, try a fit and flare or wrap dress to really feel like a star. Skinny jeans and leggings can be perfect for your body type when looking for pants.

Apple Shape

What It Is: Larger upper body than lower body. Bigger shoulders and bust.

What to Wear: It’s all about relaxed and flowy tops for apple shapes. V-necks and A-line silhouettes look great on these body types. Make sure jackets hit at the upper thigh or hip for the most flattering fit. When it comes to dresses, maxis and strapless dresses can be a perfect fit. Choose jeans in cuts like skinny or even jeggings and leggings.

Pear Shape

What It Is: Larger lower body than upper body. Bigger thighs and butt.

What to Wear: The best tops for a pear shape are V-necks, cowl necks and scoop necks. Waist-length jackets and ones that go to the mid-thigh can also be flattering. When it comes to pants, boot cut and flare are best. With dresses, A-lines are perfect as well as those with dramatic sleeves and belts.

Rectangle Shape

What It Is: A more athletic shape. Evenly disturbed weight across whole body. No defined waist.

What to Wear: When it comes to tops, scooped or rounded necklines are best along, with anything strapless! Dresses of all shapes looks great on this figure, so decide what feature you want to show off and go from there.
