One of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the United States is the tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty. More than 125,000 of these procedures are performed each year, and as technology advances the surgery becomes less invasive and easier to recover from. However, there is still an obvious recovery period, as with any surgery, so here are some ways to make your recovery as easy, fast and pain-free as possible.
1. Follow Your Surgeon’s Recommendations
Although this one may seem obvious, you’d be surprised to hear just how many patients try to push themselves too soon and end up taking a step back in the recovery process as a result. There’s a reason for every recommendation and instruction we give in the recovery process. Even if you’re feeling better and feel like you could be more active, don’t. It’s not worth risking a longer and more painful recovery.
2. Be Patient
It can be frustrating when recovery seems like it’s taking a long time. Everyone’s body responds differently to surgery and recovery. Most patients can return to work in two weeks, but it may take some people longer to feel comfortable enough to return to work. This depends especially on the nature of your job.
3. Eat Foods That Help Your Body Recover
Food can be extremely healing when the right choices are made. It can be fuel to help your body repair itself. Dark leafy greens and foods high in vitamin C can be excellent choices to help encourage your body’s natural ability to heal. Avoid salty foods and ones that are likely to cause gas.
4. Avoid Comedies
This is something people don’t think about until it’s too late. Passing the time in bed or on the couch recovering likely involves lots of television and movies. You may be tempted to watch a comedy to improve your mood, but be careful. Laughing can be painful as it utilizes your abdominal muscles, which are likely still tender and sore.
