What is Otoplasty?
Otoplasty, or ear correction surgery, is most often performed for two reasons – to bring protruding ears closer to the head or to correct ears that have become misshapen due to accident or injury. Many patients choose to cover their ears with their hair, hats, or by other means, but otoplasty surgery is a permanent solution that can eliminate the loss of confidence that can come with this aesthetic condition.
During otoplasty surgery, Dr. Wortham will create careful incisions within the natural folds of your ears in order to minimize visible scarring. From there, the cartilage that shapes the ear will be reshaped, and in cases of protruding ears, permanent sutures will be placed into the ears to pin them closer to the head for a more natural-looking appearance.
Any residual scarring from otoplasty is typically well-hidden behind the ears or in the natural folds of your skin. Any scarring that is visible will fade with time, and your incision preferences will be discussed with Dr. Wortham prior to your procedure.
What is the Recovery Like?
Mild bruising, swelling, and some minor discomfort may be experienced during the initial recovery process after otoplasty surgery. Patients often return to work quickly after this procedure, but activities may be limited during the first few weeks. Sports that require contact or helmets are typically discouraged for six to eight weeks. Doctor Wortham will give you any post-surgical aftercare instructions you may need for your incision sites in order to reduce the risk of infection, and all other safety precautions that apply to your procedure will be discussed with you during your consultation.
Are My Results Permanent?
The improved shape and appearance of your ears after otoplasty surgery is permanent, and any visible scarring will fade over time, creating professional results that will help restore your confidence and eliminate any hesitation you have when exposing your ears.
