Sclerotherapy is a minimally-invasive medical procedure for the treatment of varicose veins and spider veins. It involves the injection of a special solution directly into the problematic vein. The vein wall is safely damaged, which causes the vein to collapse. The blood that was passing through the vein goes into a healthy vein. Gradually, the problematic vein disappears. The surrounding tissue absorbs the damaged vein and you have smooth legs again.
Sclerotherapy is a safe and effective treatment and is a proven procedure, having been used to treat varicose veins since the 1930s. Before you decide if sclerotherapy is the right treatment for you, we recommend that you have a consultation with our specialist to have your veins examined and the right treatment prescribed. If you decide it is your best option, we may give you some instructions for care before and after treatment, depending on the situation.
After the treatment, which is performed in the comfort of our office, you may be asked to walk around for a few minutes and wear compression stockings for a set amount of time. This will help to ensure that you are healing properly.
After the procedure, you will be able to drive yourself home and return to your ordinary daily activities or work. You will be encouraged to walk as much as possible and to keep the treated area out of direct sunlight.
It may take weeks or months for spider veins to disappear and a little bit more time for varicose veins to disappear. However, this depends on the situation as well as how closely you follow the aftercare instructions regarding healing.
If you believe that you are developing varicose veins and/or spider veins or if you already have large, bulging veins that show beneath the skin on your ankles or calves, we recommend that you have them treated as soon as possible. Sclerotherapy is a relatively convenient, comfortable and effective way to rid yourself of the problematic veins.
