Chin surgery describes cosmetic surgical or non-surgical procedures done to modify the chin. They are often done to make the client’s facial features look more balanced. They can be done alone or in conjunction with another procedure, depending on the situation. When potential clients visit our office for a chin enhancement consultation, some of them get the procedure confused with chin reduction. However, there are significant differences.
A Look at Chin Reduction
Chin reduction surgery is a relatively straightforward procedure that aims to reduce the size of the chin. Candidates for this procedure have chins that are too pronounced for the rest of their facial features. During this procedure, the surgeon may use a variety of special instruments to detach the bone at the chin’s tip. Excess bone may be removed from the chin and/or reshaped or shaved down to make it look more proportionate.
What About Chin Enhancement?
In chin enhancement or augmentation, our surgeon may use an implant or dermal fillers to ensure a perfect fit and a natural look. Unlike chin reduction that seeks to minimize the chin, the goal of this procedure is to enhance the chin, thus restoring balance to the facial features.
When an implant is used for chin enhancement, the procedure is relatively simple. Our surgeon skillfully inserts the implant into the preselected area. When fillers are used, our surgeon carefully injected the solution into the areas where enhancement is needed.
Of course, dermal fillers chin enhancement is less invasive than chin augmentation with implants. However, the results do not last very long. This may be a good option for you if you are considering chin enhancement, but you aren’t sure whether or not you will like your new look.
Regardless of the technique that is used, the ideal candidate for chin augmentation will be a healthy adult with realistic expectations regarding the procedure and the aftercare. Of course, our team can determine this during a consultation at our office.
