A breast lift or mastopexy is a surgical procedure used to correct drooping breasts. Unlike breast augmentation or reduction procedures, it is not done to change their size, but to improve their shape and position on the chest. If you’re interested in undergoing a procedure that can correct drooping breasts, you may want to consider undergoing a breast lift.
What does a Breast Lift Involve?
A breast lift is an outpatient procedure during which the surgeon will tighten the breast tissue and remove excess skin. In some cases, the surgeon will also reduce the size of the areola. The surgeon may also reposition the nipple so it sits higher on the chest wall. The patient usually undergoes this surgical procedure under light or deep IV sedation in combination with a local anesthetic. The procedure usually takes a few hours to complete.
What is the Recovery Period Like?
After the procedure, the surgeon will bandage the patient’s breasts. In some cases, they may also insert drainage tubes to collect excess fluids. The surgeon will remove the bandages and drainage tubes a day or two after surgery. They will also check the blood supply and color of the nipples.
The patient will have to wear a support bra or elastic bandage for several weeks to reduce swelling and provide support. They may have to take pain medication during the first week, along with antibiotics to decrease the patient’s risk of infection. After two or three weeks, the surgeon will remove all of the stitches. While patients can usually return to work within ten days of receiving treatment, the full healing process typically takes a month.
The patient may feel decreased sensation around the areola and nipple following treatment; it may take as long as a year for sensation in these areas to return to normal. The incisions will be red or pink at first, but they will fade after a few months.
