With a blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, you can once again look younger by opening up the very important “windows to your soul.” Because people are highly likely to look into your eyes as they talk to you, your eyes are often the most highly visible indicators of your age. Sadly, the eyes age more quickly than other parts of the body do because they have very thin skin and little underlying fatty tissues. Therefore, when collagen and elastin begin to break down, your upper and lower eyelids can droop significantly, and you may find yourself left with unwelcome under eye circles, droops and bags. In some scenarios, our doctor at Cosmetic Surgical Arts Center in Mount Vernon may also recommend a blepharoplasty to get rid of excessive tissues around the eyes that are limiting your vision. Specifically, a blepharoplasty can treat sagging skin around the eyes, puffy eyes due to fatty deposits and fine lines around the eyes. It can also address significant eyelid drooping that may show off the whites of your eyes around the bottom of the iris. To be a good candidate for surgery, you should have no chronic or acute conditions or infections that could limit your body’s ability to heal quickly following surgery. You will also have a far greater likelihood of seeing excellent results and fast recovery if you are a nonsmoker or if you give up smoking.
A blepharoplasty is often done under general anesthesia, although our surgeon may opt for IV sedation if the procedure is minimal. After you are sedated, the surgeon will carefully make incisions around the eyes to reach the affected tissues. The incisions will be hidden with the folds of the eyelids so that they will not be visible after they heal. Once they have completed their work, they will close the incisions. Skin glue is often used rather than sutures because this is a very sensitive area.
As soon as your surgery is over, you will be allowed to wake up and will be sent home to rest and recuperate. You will need to keep your head elevated at all times for several days to allow swelling to decrease. You may also notice a bit of drainage and bruising around the affected sites. Our surgeon will give you instructions on how to care for the incisions and for your eyes when you are discharged. Of course, you will need to be careful when initially cleaning the area.
Our patients in Mount Vernon love the results that they see after having a blepharoplasty. Their eyes appear newly vibrant, and they often feel that 10 or 20 years have been taken off the age of their faces.
